Welcome to the Healthwatch Kingston Upon Hull Newsletter. In our Newsletter we provider regular updates of our activities as well as the activities, events and information of other local services and organisations in the area.

Healthwatch Updates

At Healthwatch, our focus is to ensure that health and social care services work for you and to do this, we need to hear from you.

By speaking with us and sharing your experiences, you are empowering and supporting us to improve local services by informing and advising those who provide and commission services what is needed by our local communities.

Any information you share with Healthwatch is kept anonymous, not shared with anyone and used solely to encourage and support change.

Are you able to design and manage projects, whilst also having the ability to lead and inspire a team to deliver high quality services?

If so we have an exciting opportunity for someone to take on the leadership of our Healthwatch Kingston upon Hull team.

The role of the Healthwatch Manager is to lead and drive forward the development and delivery of Healthwatch Kingston upon Hull. The post holder will work closely with colleagues and partners and ensure the successful delivery of the annual workplan, as well as having responsibility for designing and leading on projects, and forming collaborative relationships with all key stakeholders.

The post has a starting salary of £28,000, rising with experience, with a wide range of access to training and personal development opportunities. You will be based at our offices in Hull, with regular attendance travel across Hull and the surrounding areas.

Let's talk about Menopause

Throughout July, we’ve been asking to hear your experiences with menopausal support and so far we’ve received a phenomenal 313 responses!

The closing date for the menopause survey is Sunday 31st July, after which we will analyse the information received to understand what next steps we need to take to improve local support.

Each of your experiences are uniquely incredible and we thank you for being open and sharing them with us.

Your experiences matter

In June, Healthwatch found that 29.7% of experiences we collected related to Dentistry; with ‘Quality of Treatment’ being the most common issue identified.

We have shared our findings with 18 service leads to assist them in understanding where improvements may be made.

Want to make a complaint?

The Independent NHS Complaints Advocacy Service provides free and impartial advice and support from start to finish of the complaints process.

In June, the service supported in 5 new complaints; provided support in 55 ongoing cases and 6 complaints were closed.

How we can help

Healthwatch provides information and advice to help you get the most of your local health and social care services.

From the enquiries we received in June, we:

  • Provided 75% with information and advice
  • Supported 16.7% by contacting GP’s on their behalf
  • Escalated 8.3% to partner organisations

World Breastfeeding Week 2022 : 1st - 7th August

To celebrate the campaign in protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding across different levels of society, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is working collaboratively with the East Riding Children’s Centres. Highlighting the importance of breastfeeding worldwide and the links between breastfeeding and good nutrition, food security and reduction of inequalities.

The East Riding Children’s Centres are holding local breastfeeding events throughout the week across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Hull Pride 2022

Hull Pride is Yorkshire’s largest free pride event, celebrating the LGBT+ community with friends and allies.

Festivities start with a parade through the city centre, making its way to Queen’s Gardens for the main Pride festival. Be prepared for more glits, glamour and full on entertainment as Pride in Hull is bringing people back together again!

#TalkSuicide

A life is lost through suicide every two hours in the UK but suicidal thoughts and feelings affect thousands of us every single day.

The #TalkSuicide campaign has been created by the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership to reduce the stigma around talking about suicide, raising awareness of free suicide prevention training, and learning potentially life saving skills.

Whether you have dementia, or you care for someone who has dementia, Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group are there to support and guide you through your journey, so you’re not alone.

Butterflies currently stage multiple workshops, group events and monthly social gatherings which provide essential help and information.

Mind, Hull and East Yorkshire

Mind Hull and East Yorkshire are currently sharing a range of hobbies and tips that can help if you experience anxiety. According to Mind anxiety can leave you feeling stressed, worried and physically exhausted, but it can also make it harder for people to make friends, these hobbies are a fantastic way to help meet like minded people, forcing you out of your comfort zone in the best possible way.

Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is the 4th most common form of cancer and screening can help prevent or find it at an early stage, when it’s easier to treat. 

In response to this, the NHS if offering screening to everyone aged 60-74; with a view to make it available to everyone aged 50 to 59 years gradually over the next 3 years. 

Always see a GP if you have symptoms of bowel cancer at any age, even if you have recently completed a NHS bowel cancer screening test kit – do not wait to have a screening test.

Become a Cancer Champion

Cancer Champions are equipped with the knowledge needed to raise awareness about cancer, engage in conversations that could help to reduce the risk of cancer and encourage early diagnosis of cancer – when treatment could be simpler and more successful.

No skills, qualifications or any specialised knowledge of cancer is required to take part in Cancer Champions training. The free awareness sessions teach people about the key facts, statistics, symptoms, and screenings linked to a number of cancers.

Menopaus'ull Support Network

The Menopaus’ull Support Network aims to empower, support and educate women who are going through the menopause, enabling them to make informed choices on their health and wellbeing.

They offer:

Free monthly Webinairs delivered by experts in their field, covering a variety of menopause related topics.

Access to a Facebook support group along with the opportunity to attend regular local menopause cafes. 

A emphasis on bone health in the menopause including a research study by University of Hull.

Opportunities to get involved in a variety of exercises classes and wellbeing support programmes.

Opportunity to loan menopause related books from the menopause library and to view previous recorded webinars.

Hull and East Riding Children's Neurodiversity Service

This new service brings together children’s services across Hull and East Riding to provide a joint up approach across health and social care for children and young people with neurodiverse needs.
 
Working together with children, young people and their families, this new approach aims to understand what support is needed and how best services can help.
 
The ‘front door’ of the service allows you to make a request for support directly via telephone or online.
