Healthwatch wants to provide our Volunteers with as much opportunity and experience as possible. We make sure that our Volunteers are treated and supported as individuals to maximise their enjoyment of the roles we offer and the benefit gained from Volunteering with us.
You can find below the various opportunities we currently offer. If you are not sure which opportunities work best for you, we are happy to speak to you and answer any questions prior to applying.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Healthwatch Administrator
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by using the experiences of service users, family of and carers to identify good and poor practices as well as gaps in the provision of services. We want to build confidence within the community that their experiences, whether good or poor, are important, that they should be heard and will make a difference.
Healthwatch Administrators support our mission by ensuring that accurate data entry is recorded, such as feedback from engagement events and through our surveys. They will ensure to keep the information we have available updated so we are able to maintain a high-quality service and provide the correct advice to the individuals who access our support at the first point of contact.
Key Tasks:
- Support the Volunteer Coordinator and other members of Healthwatch by maintaining database information, inputting feedback from events, surveys, other event information and any other data collected.
- Research voluntary and community services and ensure all information we hold to signpost service users are up-to-data.
- Reviewing documents to ensure they are robustIdentify ways to improve data collection, surveys and databases.
- Assist in the creation of office documents / merchandise by either:
- Creating a template / templates to demonstrate your ideas.
- Providing suggestions in the design process.
- Support Healthwatch in other administrative tasks as and when required.
- Creating a template / templates to demonstrate your ideas.
- Assist in the preparation for and take part in engagement events, at volunteer fayres and other events as needed
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Community Champion
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by using the experiences of service users, family of and carers to identify good and poor practices as well as gaps in the provision of services. We want to build confidence within the community that their experiences, whether good or poor, are important, that they should be heard and will make a difference.
Community Champions are crucial in our ability to lay the framework to developing strong relationships within the community. Community Champions are active members in their community and will seek out opportunities to engage with other local and seldom groups, they will be the face of Healthwatch to these groups and build their confidence in us, encouraging them to support our mission and promote our service to members of their community.
Key Tasks:
- Research local groups and identify opportunities where Healthwatch can become more involved.
- Engage with local groups on their own terms, promote the mission of Healthwatch to the community and enable voice to be heard by encouraging them to complete and promote our survey.
- Encourage feedback from the community about the Healthwatch survey and assist in its development to ensure it is robust.
- Identify local stories (whether that be Health and Social Care service related or good news stories) and bring to the attention of Healthwatch.
- Promote the Healthwatch Newsletter and encourage people to receive updates of Healthwatch’s activities through social media platforms.
- Ensure that Healthwatch promotional material is maintained and readily available within the local community (e.g. GP / Dentist surgeries, Pharmacies)
- Undertake training appropriate to the role.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Community Engagement Volunteer
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by using the experiences of service users, family of and carers to identify good and poor practices as well as gaps in the provision of services. We want to build confidence within the community that their experiences, whether good or poor, are important, that they should be heard and will make a difference.
Community Engagement Volunteers are vital to our mission as they are the face of Healthwatch and will actively promote our organisation within the community. They will reach out and engage with the community on their own terms, making sure to listen to their experiences and build their confidence by ensuring that their voices are heard.
Key Tasks:
- Assist in promoting Healthwatch by taking part in engagement events, at volunteer fayres and other events as needed.
- Engage with local communities at engagement events and enable their voice to be heard by recording their experiences through our survey.
- Promote the Healthwatch Newsletter during engagement events and encourage people to receive updates of Healthwatch’s activities through social media platforms.
- Assist with the continual development of the Healthwatch survey to ensure it meets the needs of those that we engage with.
- Identify local and national news in relation Health and Social Care services and bring them to the attention of Healthwatch.
- Identify alternative media sources which can reach people with learning difficulties and literacy issues.
- Undertake training appropriate to the role.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Enter and View Ambassador
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by ensuring providers are offered an independent laypersons perspective into the delivery of their service.
Enter and View Ambassadors enter Health and Social Care premises either through invitation of the provider, because of themed work Healthwatch is conducting or due to the experiences provided to us by service users.
An Enter and View is not an inspection, it is an opportunity for Healthwatch as an independent organisation to view the delivery of the service first-hand and to engage with service users, family of and / or carers at the point of delivery so we can understand the full picture.
Enter and View Ambassadors collect information about the nature and quality of services, the good practices and potential areas of improvement. This information is collated into a report along with any reasonable and achievable recommendations which is then sent to the provider, governing bodies such as Local Authority and Care Quality Commission as well as Healthwatch England.
Key Tasks:
- Participate in pre-visit planning meetings.
- Speak with service users, relatives, carers and staff about their experience of the service.
- Observe the physical environment of the communal areas, noting areas of concern or good practice.
- Observe the delivery of service within communal areas e.g. activities, mealtime and interaction between staff and service users.
- Make notes during the visit to contribute towards the Enter and View visit report.
- Suggest recommendations that could improve the experience of service users.
- Conduct surveys and questionnaires about people’s experiences of Health and Social Care.
- Undertake training appropriate to the role.
- Assist in promoting Healthwatch by taking part in volunteer fayres and other events as needed.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Mystery Shopper
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to ensure everyone has access the same type of information, advice and guidance whenever they need it from different Health and Social Care services.
Mystery Shoppers are important to Healthwatch as they will be assessing the amount of information available and the level of service provided in Health and Social Care settings by asking for a range of information and how to be signposted to other agencies.
Key Tasks:
- Visiting Health and Social Care services (e.g. GP / Dentist surgeries, pharmacies etc.) and asking for information as a member of the community.
- Identify if Health and Social Care services have enough information about local services and are able to signpost correctly to these services.
- Identify if Healthwatch and other organisations promotional materials (e.g. Posters / leaflets) are displayed in the setting and easily accessible by the public.
- Write a report regarding your experience and any recommendations to improve the service provided.
- Assist in promoting Healthwatch by taking part in volunteer fayres and other events as needed.
- Undertake training appropriate to the role.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Reading Panel Volunteer
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to ensure that the information given to the community from organisations within Health and Social Care are easy to read and understand.
Reading Panel Volunteers are crucial in achieving this. They provide a robust service to the community as they review a range of documentation from ourselves and others providers to critique and provide feedback from a layperson’s perspective. They ensure that the documentation the community has access to does not contain anything that is difficult to comprehend or easy to misunderstand.
Reading Panel Volunteers are also essential in allowing Healthwatch to scan and reference a wide range of information to use as evidence towards any themed work or research that we are conducting.
Key Tasks:
- Reviewing documents for the following:
- Clean and Clear presentation.
- Easy to read and understand.
- Use of simple and clear language.
- Avoided use of jargon.
- Simple explanation of complex information.
- Users ability to retain information from document.
- Clean and Clear presentation.
- Providing feedback along with any recommendations for improvement to the Delivery Manager.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Healthwatch Sector Champion
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by using the experiences of service users, family of and carers to identify good and poor practices as well as gaps in the provision of services. We want to build confidence within the community that their experiences, whether good or poor, are important, that they should be heard and will make a difference.
Healthwatch Sector Champions are representatives of Voluntary Community Support (VCS) organisations, education establishments and private industry. They support Healthwatch by using their expertise and influence to build connections between Healthwatch, their organisations and clients. They will promote Healthwatch within their organisation and encourage their clients to become involved with Healthwatch, advertising the activities of Healthwatch and the work that we do.
Key Tasks:
- Inform members of your organisation, other organisations and clients about the activities of Healthwatch and the work that we do.
- Encourage members of your organisation, other organisation and clients to volunteer with Healthwatch and / or promote volunteering opportunities to others.
- Identify opportunities for Healthwatch to promote our survey within the sector, through your organisation, other organisations and clients in order to reach the wider community.
- Encourage others to receive updates from Healthwatch via our newsletter.
- Identify ways in which Healthwatch can become more involved within the sector and assist in the development of relationships between Healthwatch and other organisations.
- Promote awareness of Healthwatch by displaying our promotional materials e.g. leaflets and posters.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Healthwatch Volunteer Support Mentor
Purpose of the Role:
Healthwatch aims to improve local Health and Social Care services by using the experiences of service users, family of and carers to identify good and poor practices as well as gaps in the provision of services. We want to build confidence within the community that their experiences, whether good or poor, are important, that they should be heard and will make a difference.
Healthwatch Volunteer Support Mentors are representatives of seldom heard groups and support Healthwatch by using their experience and influence to build confidence within these groups. They will act as a mentor, assist and encourage the others to become involved in Healthwatch, empowering them to share their experiences, promote the activities of Healthwatch and get involved in the work that we do.
Key Tasks
- Engage with members of seldom-heard groups, ensuring that Healthwatch listens to and understands the needs and views of the communities they represent.
- Ensure that Healthwatch surveys incorporate of the needs and views of seldom-heard communities.
- Encourage other members of seldom-heard groups to provide their experiences to Healthwatch so we can ensure that local Health and Social Care services understand and meet their needs.
- Support the direct involvement of individuals in your represented groups and promote the benefits of volunteering and the opportunities available at Healthwatch to other members of seldom-heard groups and the wider communities.
- Promote the Healthwatch Newsletter and encourage members of seldom-heard groups and the wider communities to receive updates of Healthwatch activities.
Volunteer Role Description
Role Title: Virtual Engagement Volunteer
Purpose of the Role:
Virtual Engagement Volunteers collect information about the nature and quality of local Health and social Care services as well as the good practices and potential areas of improvement by speaking to service users, their families / carers and staff members virtually.
They will support in Virtual Enter and View activities, which includes taking a virtual tour of the service, making notes on their observations, including any good practice or concerns.
In-addition to this, where necessary Virtual Engagement Volunteers will also attend meetings as a Healthwatch Representative, reporting back topics of discussion and identifying where Healthwatch and our local communities may benefit by our involvement in projects delivered by other organisations.
Key Tasks
- Participate in meetings with external bodies as a representative of Healthwatch.
- Speak with service users, relatives, carers and staff about their experience of the service virtually.
- Observe the physical environment of the communal areas, noting areas of concern or good practice.
- Make notes during the visit to contribute towards the Enter and View visit report.
- Suggest recommendations that could improve the experience of service users.
- Conduct surveys and questionnaires about people’s experiences of Health and Social Care virtually.
- Undertake training appropriate to the role.
- Assist in promoting Healthwatch by taking part in volunteer fayres and other events as needed.
Personal Attributes:
You do not need any specific experience or knowledge to be a Volunteer with Healthwatch. Instead we ask that our Volunteers can demonstrate the following attributes:
- Good interpersonal skills, demonstrating active listening and an open minded, non-judgemental attitude.
- Be approachable and confident when engaging with individuals from a range of backgrounds and have a commitment to promoting Equality and Diversity.
- Be respectful, compassionate and supportive of and towards others.
- Be proactive in protecting personal data and maintaining confidentiality.
- Have an interest in Health and Social Care and be passionate about making a difference to the lives of others.
- Able to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
- Good written communication skills including the ability to take notes and write up conversations
Availability:
Volunteering opportunities with Healthwatch will, for the most part, be provided Monday to Friday within office hours. There may be occasions however where volunteering opportunities are offered outside of these times.
There is no time commitment when volunteering with Healthwatch except for the role of an Enter and View Ambassador where we would recommend you have one full day available whenever you choose to volunteer. This is due the intricate nature of the role as an Enter and View can take anywhere between two to four hours depending on the size of the premises without travelling time.
Location:
There are not set locations for roles with Healthwatch as opportunities can take place across the area; in the office or even in your own home. You will be informed ahead of time of opportunities and their location so you can decide which opportunities work best for you.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check:
You will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check any role with Healthwatch. This will be at no cost to you. Having a criminal conviction does not preclude you from Volunteering, and each case will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Sector Champions are representatives of local organisations who support us by using their expertise and influence to build connections between Healthwatch, their organisations and clients.

Virtual Engagement
Virtual Engagement Volunteers collect information about the nature and quality of local Health and Social Care services by speaking to service users, their families, carers and staff members.

Volunteer Support Mentor
Healthwatch Volunteer Support Mentors are representatives of seldom heard groups and support Healthwatch by using their experience and influence to build confidence within these groups.
Youthwatch Opportunities
Youthwatch offers those aged 16 to 25 the opportunity to volunteer in roles specific to addressing the needs and issues of young people living in Hull within health and social care services.

Active Partnership Lead
Our sports and active partnership volunteer will attend local competitions and sessions to engage with young people, promoting the positive impact of an active healthy lifestyle.

Engagement Volunteer
Youth Engagement Volunteers collect information about the nature and quality of local Health and Social Care services by speaking to local young people about their experiences.

Foodbank Volunteer
Support local communities and residents by working with food banks in the organisation, packing and distribution of parcels. Whilst building and maintaining community relations.

Social Media Assistant
Social media and marketing assistants support the team with content creation and production across our social media platforms. Raising awareness of Healthwatch Hull and continuing to promote various campaigns and projects.

Trend Researcher
Investigating the needs of young people living in Hull using health and social care services. By identifying reoccurring or prominent trends you will assist in the production of new engagement material such as surveys and reports ensuring young peoples voices are heard.
