Helena worked as a local government officer at Hull City Council from 1983 until her early retirement in 2010. Prior to 1980 she worked for the then Midland Bank (now HSBC). In 1980 she came to Hull to study at the University and fell in love with the City which has become home to Helena and her family.
In 2010 Helena became an Independent Member of the Humberside Police Authority as well as a Governor at 3 local Hull schools. In 2012, she was elected as Councillor for Newington Ward in the west of the City.
From 2013 – 2018 she was responsible (at various times) for Prevention & Safeguarding with responsibility for Children, Young People and Adult Services; Public Health; Corporate Services & Procurement; and Equalities, Diversity & Community Cohesion. In 2018 she retired from the Council.
As well as being the Chair of Healthwatch Hull, Helena is currently a trustee at Emmaus H&ER and a trustee of the Older Peoples Partnership Board.
